At this year's Grammy Awards, to be held February 8 in Los Angeles, David Bowie, Cream, Richard Pryor and Country legend Merle Haggard will be honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards. Blues great Robert Johnson, Opera singer Jessye Norman and Folk group The Weavers also will receive the award. As for the prestigious Trustees Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the industry in a non-performing capacity, Island Records founder Chris Blackwell, late Country producer Owen Bradley and recording engineer Al Schmitt will be honored. Technical Grammys will be presented to the late Tom Dowd as well as Bell Labs and Western Electric.

"This year's honorees are a prestigious group of diverse and influential creators who have contributed some of the most distinguished and influential recordings," said Recording Academy President Neil Portnow. "Their work exemplifies the highest artistic and technical standards, creating a timeless legacy that has positively affected multiple generations, and will continue to influence generations to come."

Formal acknowledgment of these special awards will be made at an elite ceremony on Tuesday, February 7, as well as during the 48th Annual Grammy Awards the next day. As previously reported, Mariah Carey, Kanye West and John Legend lead the musical nominations with eight nods each. The ceremony will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.

YAY! i never like Bowie until i saw him LIVE in Jacksonville Fla....back in 90? ...cant remember ...but i was front row and sat on my mans shoulders the whole concert lol..... Bowie was GREAT! ...and i saw Merle Haggard couple yrs. ago....it was fun too!!! CONGRATS to them ...they deserve it. * and oh yeah PRYOR def deserves it too and that Robert Johnson gets around doesnt he?

David Bowie is awesome a legend I love his music! Did anyone else notice at Lisa Maries concert in Kansas City that over the speakers before she came on stage they were playing Bowies "New Killer Star"? I thought the song was fitting for the occasion!
