Metallica has posted more info on their new Web site, MissionMetallica.com, which offers fans an inside look at the making of the new album. Right now the band has posted a teaser video of them working in the studio which offers clips of riffs and new music they have been working on. The band also promises "fly on the wall" footage of writing and recording, unique live tracks, exclusive studio photos and the ability to win backstage passes for every show this summer. Metallica also plans to launch "Mission: Metallica Platinum," which will provide downloads of live shows and delivery of the physical album the day it comes out, though there is no indication yet of how much this service will cost, if anything. The band promises even more content will premiere on the site in the coming weeks, all of which will lead up to the release of their still-untitled new studio album, expected in September. Metallica has also announced a performance as part of the Hulalbaloo benefit concert in Los Angeles this Wednesday, May 14, after being asked by Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to participate. The show benefits the Silverlake Conservatory of Music.

Metallica has been saying for months that their new record will harken back to some of their older material, and drummer Lars Ulrich reiterated that point in a conference call yesterday. "It's definitely pretty all over the place: a lot of variation, a lot of fast, slow, melodic, hardcore, nutty, super-fast speed stuff," he told reporters. "It's more like some of the earlier records, which were a little more dynamic within the songs. And on those records, there were a lot of long songs that were - without sounding too corny - journeys. You'd go here and then you'd go over here and then this, and then that would happen. It feels like kind of a lot of that stuff. It's difficult for me to sit down and brand it yet, because I'm still so close to it."

Ulrich also said the band hopes to have the album finished by Memorial Day and they have already met with a graphic designer about the artwork. They plan to release it in mid-September and start touring in October.

"We sort of promised ourselves that unlike all the records we made in the '90s, [which] were just completely stressed-out and just nutty, that we were gonna try and have a little more sane environment - and we've actually, surprising mostly to ourselves, been able to keep to that," Ulrich said. "We've pretty much finished the music now, so all the next level stuff is just starting to go down."

He also noted that the album will probably contain only 10 songs since the tunes are pretty long. "These are long songs... we're talking seven-minute, eight-minute, nine-minute nutty-a.ss songs," he said. "We don't make them long or short on purpose; you just kind of do what feels natural."

As reported yesterday, Metallica played its first show in quite a while on Wednesday night in Los Angeles at a benefit for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. Tonight they will play Tucson's KFMA Day and Saturday brings the KROQ/Los Angeles Weenie Roast. Metallica also will headline the Bonnaroo Music Festival in Tennessee on June 13 and the one-day Ozzfest in Dallas on August 9.

ALBUM TITLE RELEASED

Metallica found the time over the weekend to both rock out at Bonnaroo and announce the title of their highly-anticipated new studio album. According to the band's Web site, the new record is called Death Magnetic and will be out in September. The logo for the record was slowly revealed on the site last week.
