Fans of Metallica may be surprised to hear the band's new single debut in a video game rather than on the radio or online. Apparently, the game ROCK BAND, which is a product of MTV and gaming company Harmonix, has struck a deal with the group to debut a new tune.

Speculation has been flying that Metallica's long-awaited next album will be more "old school." Now drummer Lars Ulrich has spoken a little more about it with Revolver magazine, saying, "This stuff is certainly a lot more dynamic and a lot more varied than the last couple of go-rounds. There's a lot of light and shade in these songs. There's heavy, fast, nutty stuff, and then there's some slowdowns and musical interludes. It's pretty different from St. Anger, and it's pretty different from the Load stuff. This stuff is not the one-dimensional punch in the face that St. Anger was. This is probably a little more like those couple of albums back there in the decade that begins with an 8." Metallica's new album is tentatively due in the spring/summer.

Metallica have announced the initial dates of their summer European tour, though they promise more shows will be added. As of now they have scheduled seven European shows beginning with one in Chorzow, Poland on May 28. Meanwhile, the band is still working on their next album (which is due this year), and their song "The Ecstasy Of Gold" is nominated for Best Rock Instrumental Performance at this year's Grammys.

Pearl Jam and Metallica top the bill for the 2008 edition of the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival, giving the seventh annual event its most diverse and hard rocking lineup yet. It is set for June 15-18th in Manchester, TN.

As fans around the world await a follow up to 2003's St. Anger, Metallica is eyeing September as the release date for their new opus. The band has been working with producer Rick Rubin, and in various interviews, they have dropped hints that the new material harkens back to their thrashier sound from the '80s. Speaking to BBC 6 Music recently, drummer Lars Ulrich said, "We're just finishing up a record, we've got six weeks left and it should be out in September. That's the idea right now."

Meanwhile, the band is re-releasing their first two album on vinyl. Kill 'Em All and Ride The Lightning will be coming out on April 15 in two versions: one like the original on a single disc spinning at 33 1/3, and the other as a two-disc, 180 gram vinyl, 45 rpm package in a double gatefold sleeve. Master Of Puppets and ...And Justice For All will be the next re-issues and should be coming out on vinyl in June.

Metallica is playing a number of European dates and festivals this summer, but so far, their only U.S. date is an appearance at the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, TN on June 13.

Metallica revealed during the "Record Store Day" appearance that U.S. tour dates are planned for September this year. Meanwhile, perhaps in an effort to thwart early leaks, the band has launched a new Web site at MissionMetallica.com that will allow fans to hear the new album before it's finished. The site reads "Mission: Metallica Coming This May" and fans can submit their e-mail address for updates.
