Bob Dylan will debut his own satellite radio program on Wednesday, playing music in line with his eclectic tastes interspersed with riffs on musical history and his own career.
CBC Arts Bob Dylan, seen here performing in 2004, brings eclectic music and personal memories to XM Satellite Radio. (AP Photo/Dean Cox) "Theme Time Radio Hour" airs at 10 a.m. EDT on XM satellite radio, on the rock channel Deep Tracks. The first will centre on the theme of weather. Dylan will play songs such as "Blow, Wind, Blow" by Muddy Waters, "A Place in the Sun" sung in Italian by Stevie Wonder and "Keep on the Sunny Side" by the Carter Family. Each show will have a theme, ranging from cars to police to whiskey. The once reclusive Dylan reflects on the theme and musical selections to talk about the roots of American popular music and vamp on the lyrics of everyone from Buck Owens to LL Cool J. Dylan records the shows in advance from his home or wherever he is on tour. "Some songs you don't have to talk about; they just say it all: 'Mama get the hammer, there's a fly on baby's head,'" he says of the Bobby Peterson Quintet's song "Mamma Get the Hammer", which is to air just before Mother's Day. The show has Dylan cracking mother-in-law jokes and referring to the corny television of the past. "Hey, let's not forget "Hee Haw". Never missed it," he says, referring to the television comedy program that aired 1969 to 1993. "I still remember some of them jokes from "Hee Haw": 'My mother-in-law's very neat - puts paper under the cuckoo clock.'" The show features songs as different as the 1955 Jimmy McCracklin tune "Gonna Tell Your Mother", which Dylan refers to as "a strange weed indeed," to LL Cool J's "Mamma Said Knock You Out". Dylan will also be reading listeners' e-mails and responding to special requests. His on-air guests will include people such as Elvis Costello, Sarah Silverman and Charlie Sheen.
