Lindsay Lohan's personal life has supplied plenty of drama — including paparazzi chases, an on-again, off-again beef with Hilary Duff and her much-publicized family problems — but when it comes to acting, she's still best known for teen comedies "Freaky Friday" and "Mean Girls."

Now it would appear that the actress is anxious to step things up a bit on the big screen.

According to a Variety report, Lohan has signed on to star alongside Jared Leto in "Chapter 27," an independent film about the 1980 murder of John Lennon.

This latest casting follows something of a new career trend for Lohan, who recently wrapped work on Robert Altman's "A Prairie Home Companion" (with Woody Harrelson, Tommy Lee Jones, Virginia Madsen and Meryl Streep) and last month, signed on to join Anthony Hopkins, Sharon Stone, Demi Moore, Elijah Wood and Nick Cannon in the ensemble cast of "Bobby," a partially fictionalized account of Robert F. Kennedy's 1968 assassination, directed by Emilio Estevez (see "Lindsay Lohan Falls For Elijah Wood In 'Bobby' ").

In "Chapter 27," Lohan will assume the role of a Lennon fan who befriends Mark Chapman (played by Leto) just days before he assassinates the musician outside his New York apartment building. There's no word yet on who will be playing Lennon.

Leto, whose recent credits include "Lord of War" and "Alexander," has put acting on the backburner in recent months, devoting much of his time and focus to music. His band 30 Seconds to Mars has been on the road since June; the group, on tour with Audioslave and Seether through November 19 in Las Vegas, released its second album, A Beautiful Lie, back in August (see "30 Seconds To Mars' Jared Leto Succeeds Where Keanu And Crowe Failed").

Lindsay Lohan's second album, A Little More Personal (Raw) hits stores on December 6.

what does chapter 27 mean? ...is it that book that chapman freaked on? catcher and the rye? ...there was another killer or serial killer that freaked on that book.... ive never read it....but i guess it really affects people lol i dont know. ...*

I am not sure where the name for the movie came from actually, but it should be interesting. I don't usually like movies based on the serial killers life because I think it just puts too much of a possible "good light" on it, but I think this one will be really good and Jared Leto is an amazing actor. I hate it when he plays bad guys though lol, but he'll play his role bad or good in such an amazing way.

yeah i agree....ive watched alot of biographies about serial killers tho lol...used to want to go to law school...then found out how much you have to read lol...that chapman guy isnt a serial killer tho i dont think ...he ruined it for all of us ...poor Lennon. so sad. i wonder what he would be singin about today? ...and if hed still be with yoko lol

yeah he wasn't serial killer. I meant the killers lol. I am used to watching serial killer movies it was a typo. Yeah Chapman wasn't all there. It is a shame about Lennon.
