Tartan tribute for the King
Lisa Marie Presley has reportedly commissioned an Edinburgh kiltmaker to create an official Elvis tartan. The daughter of the King of rock and roll came to the Capital last week. The 39-year-old songwriter has been looking into ways of strengthening Elvis's Scottish heritage, after it emerged his ancestors hailed from Aberdeenshire. She visited 21st Century Kilts on the Royal mile. After speaking to designer Howie Nicholsby, Lisa Marie learned she could claim the maiden name of Elvis's mother, Gladys Smith, for her tartan. He was born in America's Deep South, but Elvis Presley's Scottish roots have been cemented thanks to his daughter Lisa Marie. I can reveal the 39-year-old songwriter has just returned from a trip to Edinburgh, where she chose a new family tartan. Elvis's ties to Scotland were discovered three years ago and there is already a Presley tartan named after Lonmay, the Aberdeenshire village of his forebears. But Lisa Marie, who flew into Britain with her mother Priscilla, 62, and daughter Riley, 18, to see the Led Zeppelin reunion concert in London, picked another design based on her ties to Elvis's mother, Gladys Smith. "She explained she is a Smith through her paternal grandmother," tour guide Ken Hanley tells me. "There's a wellknown Smith tartan, which means she's entitled to have her own tartan made up." Hanley took Lisa Marie, who travelled north with Riley and her 15- year-old son Benjamin, to 21st Century Kilts, where she chose a vibrant design with golds and reds. "It will be lodged officially with the Highland Tartan Society and be specially weaved for her," he adds. "I spent two days with them. She was lovely. They loved having Scottish high tea on the Royal Mile." OMG..I too looked into getting a family Tartan when I was in Edinburgh in '98!! I found out I was not just American Indian and Irish, but also scottish as well years ago. I did pick up a tartan certificate that has the colors on it. I have it somewhere in storage right now, lol.
