LOS ANGELES - A court commissioner gave sole physical and legal custody of Britney Spears' two little boys Friday to ex-husband Kevin Federline and suspended the troubled pop star's visitation rights.

Spears was hauled away from her home to a hospital by paramedics a day before, after police had to intervene when she refused to return the children to Federline after a court-monitored visit.

Commissioner Scott Gordon ordered another hearing to be held Jan. 14.

Federline had previously been awarded temporary custody of 2-year-old Sean Preston and 1-year-old Jayden James because Spears has defied court orders, resulting in limitations on her visitation.

"I'm not happy about any of these events," Federline attorney Mark Vincent Kaplan said when he left a closed-door emergency hearing Friday afternoon. "There's no winners here."

Federline was not in court for the hearing, Kaplan said.

The attorney had said he did not expect the ruling to be released until Monday, but it was issued shortly after the hearing concluded.

Law professor Steve Cron, who is not involved in the Spears-Federline matter, predicted that Spears will face sanctions from the court for her behavior.

"My guess is that she won't be seeing her kids for a while," said Cron, who teaches at Pepperdine University in Malibu.

Gordon has little option other than to further reduce the time Spears can legally spend with her children, Cron said, "at least for the time being until she gets some help. She's obviously a very troubled person."

The 26-year-old pop star remained hospitalized Friday.

Her latest troubles began around 8 p.m. Thursday when officers were called to her home to help resolve a dispute over her refusal to turn the children over to Federline, as dictated by their custody agreement.

It took two to three hours to resolve the conflict, said Officer Ana Aguirre.

"There was a time where she was within the residence and wasn't available to be speaking to the officers, apparently," she said. "There was no threat to the children."

"Police resolved the conflict," Aguirre said. "Both children were turned over to her ex-husband Kevin Federline for custody, and she was in fact taken to a local hospital for medical treatment."

Early police reports said officers thought Spears might have been under the influence of some substance, but Aguirre said there was no evidence of that.

"Our understanding is that was not the case," she said.

Officers at the scene determined that paramedics "needed to be called" but it was unclear why, she said.

"We're not aware of any type of injuries that she sustained" and she was not combative with authorities, Aguirre said.

Spears wasn't arrested in connection with the custody dispute, Aguirre said.

"There was no actual crime that was involved," the police spokeswoman said.

Spears and Federline were married in October 2004. Her life has spiraled downward since their divorce in July. She has been photographed without underwear and appeared to be drunk and out of control in public. She shaved her head, beat a car with an umbrella and spent a month in rehab.

She had hoped to regain her pop crown with a much-hyped performance at MTV's Video Music Awards in September, but it was universally panned by fans and critics.

Still, Spears' latest album, "Blackout," earned positive reviews when it was released in October and brought Spears her first No. 1 hit in years, "Gimme More."

However, Spears remains a paparazzi target for her bizarre antics, which include frequent stops at gas-station bathrooms and holing up in a hotel room with a paparazzo.

Her 16-year-old sister, Jamie Lynn, made headlines last month when she announced that she is pregnant.

When they found Britney they said Jayden had a bruise on him which she said she ''did not do''.

I personally think Britney's mother needs to get her sorry *** on a plane to be by her daughters bedside. I think we can now say for sure Lynne's book on parenting will be cancelled. One daughter is on suicide watch in the hospital after more or less taking one of her kids hostage, and the other is 16 and pregnant. Great job Lynne!!!

Yeah I know what you mean. It just looks like sometimes she exploits her children for the sake of money instead of being a mother figure to them. I know a parent can only do so much in raising a child before their kids go off into the world, but selling her 16 year old daughters pregnancy announcment to a tabloid to me is just sick. She knew that OK magazine would pay the most - all for the money.

As for Britney, well her situation has never been a normal one and I don't think she has ever had a sense of reality. Even before she joined the Mickey Mouse club at 11 she was always a performer. Then when she reached 17 she had her first number one single and she was an instant star. She was (and probably still is) the most famous and talked about celebrity in the world. I think when she married Kevin and had them kids, she was trying to seek her sense of reality and ''normalcy''. I think this custody battle and constant preasures of the media/paparazzi got too much for her and she finally snapped. She needs her family at the moment because it appears she has no one. I hope for her childrens sake she gets the help she needs because she is going to miss out on them growing up and they are going to miss out on having their mother.

As for everything else you've said, I do agree w/you in all of it.
Unfortunately Britney didn't know when enough was enough and when to take certain things seriously and do what she needed to do...I think she was too wrapped up in Britney...

She does need help and lets hope she gets it this time. Most of all that she excepts it,you can't help those who don't want it or think they don't need it. No you can't blame her mother cause none of us no how our children are going to turn out. We should be there for them in the bad times though and let them no we love them and support them even in rough times. she was forced to grow up too soon.

I think it was a path she wanted to walk, as far as growing up to fast, for every choice we make in life there is a trade off and it's up to us how we choose to handle the situations and ourselves, she chose the head in the sand route and it's not quite working for her.
My heart goes out to those kids...
As for her mom, perhaps she should have been less worried about the fame and money and more of the mental health being of her children.

i really feel for Britney. i hope that whatever demons she has are gone and that she gets the help she so desperatley needs. cause if she doesn't it looks like she destined to share the same tragic end as Anna Nicole. it looks like she needs more positive people in her life, if her family would take time away from trashing her in the press and help her she might have a chance.

I do feel bad for her. Obviously she's not well but instead of people judging her they should back off and let her try to get better. She was never this insane. she obviously has been having a long going mental breakdown and it seems her family doesn't care. I could be wrong but has her brother Bryan or her father tried to reach out to her. I know they aren't in the spotlight and a lot of people probably don't know who they are, but still. She obviously is estranged with her mom, but what about dad. Why isn't he trying to reach out? Or is he and no one knows about it? It's been Jamie Lynn this and Lynne spears that trying to reconnect but I've always wondered where the older brother was as well as the dad in this time. Britney Spears fans are really sweet by the way.

He said he asked her to appear on his show on Monday - that is the LAST thing she needs. Yes, she needs help but not on a television show in front of cameras. Britney needs to go away from the spotlight for a LONG time.

I agree.My mom was talking about how she loves the cameras and the attention. It's why she goes out at 3 a.m. for starbucks or whatever. I was like yes but WHY do you think she loves the attention. I said no one that is happy craves attention. Only Lonely deserpate people want attention wherever they can find it. She needs people in her lives that aren't the paparazzi or Dr. Phil wanting her on televison. I still want to know where dad and brother are? I agree. She loves the attention from the media because she doesn't get it from her family and ''friends''.

Her Dad has been at the hospital with her the whole time which is good for her. They hadn't been speaking for ages before this. As for Bryan I am not sure where he is - we don't really hear much about him. I really think her mother should make the effort to at least go and see her. In my opinion Britney should move back to Louisiana and be with her family.

Yes I read he was with her. I am glad her dad was with her Jase. I heard she hasn't spoken to him in awhile and I also read that Bryan did come visit her. That makes me happy. yeah you don't hear about Bryan because he seems to be the "normal" one. I only know of him because when Britney first came out and all the fans knew about her brother and sister I thought he was cute. I still think he's cute. I saw him on some MTV special with her and he seemed rather good to her. I can't find the quote now haha but Britney claims that Bryan kept her safe, and protected her a lot growing up. The quote made me think she looked up to him a lot. Moreso than her parents. I liked it a lot too bad I can't find the exact quote lol.

I'm glad Dr. Phil scrapped the show about Britney, he should not have been allowed to go into her hospital room like that, the news here in L.A. was all over him & Cedars for it.

I hope she gets help.
