Q: You have a new album out called Now What, which is a follow-up to your 2003 debut, To Whom it May Concern. Tell us a little bit about the new album.

It's a little more focused and it's a step forward from my first one.

Q: In your official bio, you mention that while touring after your first album, you realized that you had developed your own fan base and that you had focused too much on interviews and promotions. How frustrating is it that during interviews, as much as you want to focus on your music, there are always questions about everything else but your music?

It feels like swimming against a tidal wave. If that were always the case, it would drive me crazy, but I know there is a very fixed window in which I will have to deal with it. After that I will end up on the road, but too much of that would probably drive me nuts. But it has to do with my personal life, with the personal decisions I have made along the way, decisions that everyone has made... only mine are out there. Anybody in the spotlight can get lost in that if they are not careful.

Q: Do you find that collaborating with other artists is easier because of your last name and the backing that a label might give you, or do you find that it's harder because some artists may shun away from the collaboration for whatever crazy reason?

It has not been difficult because it has always been very uncontrived and natural. I collaborated with [Smashing Pumpkins'] Billy Corgan at one point when we were already playing together.

Q: Whether you like it or not, there are always some questions that deal with everything but the music. Tell us a little bit about how you feel with your ex-husband being so prominent in the press.

I don't talk about that at all. It's crazy right now.

Q: You recently went on Oprah with your mother. Do you regret having appeared on a show that can bring up some major issues and draw out emotions?

Not at all -- I like Oprah. If it was somebody that I didn't like it would be a problem, but I admire and respect Oprah very much.

Q: Being from a men's magazine, I have to ask -- what are some of the traits that you find particularly attractive in men?

That is a hard question. If you lined up everyone I've ever dated, you wouldn't see any similarities. I have, in the past, been attracted to really strong and dominant men. But on the other side I have been attracted to very androgynous men. I don't typically fall for your average jock. I just like people that are a little atypical.

Q: When you meet men, do you find it hard to have a normal relationship because of your last name and your high-profile past, or do you think it's one reason why you gravitate toward the more eccentric guys?

Yeah... there is definitely a camaraderie that happens when you go through similar things. But there have been many other people that I have gone out with that were not in the public eye.

Q: A lot of famous sons and daughters have decided to drop their last name when they ventured out on their own. Have you ever considered dropping the last name?

Ultimately it will come down to who you are anyway, like The Wallflowers -- everyone knows that that was Jakob Dylan. To remove myself from it on that level is not my goal, but rather to distinguish myself as an artist who is famous for my music and not to any way ride on my father's coattails. Aside from the fact that I am who I am, I have still made my own type of music, and I didn't sell out, and I didn't superimpose songs with father. I want to pave my own path artistically.

Q: Do you find that you are more like your father or your mother?

Definitely my father. We had a very similar sense of humor and similar temperaments. We shared a very ironic sense of humor. For instance, animals make me laugh -- like if a really loud "old man" cough comes out of a dog, I will laugh for four days... my sense of humor is certainly not normal.

Q: In that case, I hope you find the next question funny... is Elvis dead?

Q: You could have started singing when you were young, but you decided to start later on in life -- why is that?

I just wanted to focus on other things, I wanted to ground myself and build a family. I also wanted to stabilize myself so I could go into the business and be ready. To me, [building] the foundation is the most important thing -- a lot of people do that after, but I felt it was important to do it before.

Q: If you were a guy for a day, what would you do?

I would probably play with myself all day long. That would be something exciting that I had never experienced before, so I would definitely have to check that out.
