Pumpkins Reunion To Happen At Coachella?

Last spring, on the day his first solo album was released, Billy Corgan announced to the world that he had "made plans to renew and revive The Smashing Pumpkins," adding that he wanted "my band back, and my songs." After that announcement there was no follow-up, just speculation as to what a Pumpkins reunion would actually entail.

On his MySpace blog, which has primarily been used to tell his life story, Corgan recently wrote that a surprise "will be announced soon enough." Now sources tell the NME that this announcement might just be the Smashing Pumpkins' return to the world of touring, with a series of summer concerts starting at the Coachella Festival in California. The only band confirmed for the two-day festival thus far is Depeche Mode. Coachella is set for April 29 and 30, with tickets going on sale on February 4.

Speculation as to the possible lineup of a reunited Smashing Pumpkins has included the obvious involvement of drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. Guitarist James Iha is currently a member of A Pefect Circle and just yesterday revealed he is working with '70s soft-rock band America on a new album. Former Pumpkins bassist D'Arcy Wretzky left the band in 1999 and has maintained a low profile since. It has been widely assumed that Melissa Auf der Maur, who played with the Pumpkins for their last year, would take her place in a reunion.

It looks like the recent rumor of an impending Smashing Pumpkins reunion has been squashed. XTRA/San Diego's Marco Collins tells The Chicago Tribune that Reprise, Billy Corgan's label, said the band would not be a part of this year's Coachella Festival, as has been rumored for the past week. A Reprise spokesperson added, "We never knew they were in to back out." The actual, official Coachella lineup will be revealed on Monday. Meanwhile, a mysterious fan site called billycorgan.org is reporting a "new Pumpkins" album is on the horizon, but it appears to be a hoax.

SMASHING PUMPKINS RETURN ALMOST OFFICIAL

It started last spring when Billy Corgan made a vague, public statement declaring he wanted to bring back The Smashing Pumpkins. Then there was the rumor (eventually debunked) that the band would reform for Coachella. Days later came the announcement of Lollapalooza returning to Chicago for a second year, spurring more speculation. Now comes the most concrete proof of a Pumpkins return, with multiple sources saying the wheels have begun turning to bring the seminal Rock band back.

Former Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf der Maur told MTV News, "From what I understand, Billy [will be] making a Pumpkins record over the next little while. Everyone knows Billy doesn't need too many people to make a Pumpkins record, other than [drummer] Jimmy [Chamberlin] — who he has [on board]."

Additionally, a spokesperson for Irvin Azoff's Front Line Management also told MTV News that Corgan and Chamberlin have signed a deal with their firm as the Pumpkins and are writing new music, which could be released as soon as the end of 2006.
