TMZ has learned Britney Spears is being investigated for possible child abuse.

An unscheduled hearing was held today at L.A. County Superior Court. Present -- Britney's lawyer, Dennis Wasser, K-Fed's attorney, Mark Vincent Kaplan, and a lawyer from the Los Angeles County Counsel who is assigned to the dependency court.

We do not know the specifics of the allegations but we're told the L.A. County Department of Children and Family Services is conducting an active investigation.

A hearing in the custody case has been scheduled for Sept. 4, which will be a follow up to today's appearance.

I'm not suprised by that. In fact, it's about time that it happend.

TMZ just reported that the abuse allegations have nothing to do with physical abuse, but rather with the children's alleged poor dental hygiene and sleeping habits.

I totally agree. I see parents encouraging bad dental health and eating habits every time I go to wal-mart. If that is worthy of DCFS investigation, then 90% of this country wouldn't have their kids.

Celebrities get picked on so much just because the insecure people reading blogs at home or reading the tabloids are so unhappy with their lives and so insecure that their only way of being happy is to watch celebrities falter. A very sad society we live in indeed.

I can't imagine what it would be like if Elvis were alive today- I mean can you imagine? Him being a full on drug addict, letting Lisa stay up at all hours of the night, eating greasy horrible foods. And people here are getting on Britney for ALLEGEDLY (not confirmed yet) promoting bad dental hygiene?

I personally have my doubts about Britney being an outstanding parent, but I seriously doubt she is abusing or neglecting her children in any way. I'll leave it to DCFS to decide, but the fact that DCFS has to spend their time investigating her for this pathetic excuse for child abuse, when there is REAL abuse going on in the world is really a complete waste of resources. People should think about how much harm they are doing when they waste DCFS time because of their own insecurities that lead them to want to see Britney taken down.

Think about it, DCFS has limited people and limited resources. But a celebrity investigation is high profile and they can't just ignore it or it will get them a LOT of bad press and the public will think they are incompetent etc. But think of the REAL child abusers who are NOT being investigated while DCFS wastes their time investigating Britney for the entertainment of a very sad, SICK society.

It's disgusting really.

Thank you. I agree. Not saying she's the greatest mom and she hasn't made some mistakes. We all do and she is quite the mess at times, but the media certainly makes her out to be the worst mother of the year. I highly doubt she is the worst, and I don't doubt it's exaggerated often in the media as they love to do just to sell gossip and mags. I won't say she doesn't need to be a "better" mom. I won't claim she isn't nuts sometimes, but do we as readers really KNOW what is going on for sure? No. We get the tabloid reports. Since when do they report fairly? You know when I was little I was a very picky eater and I didn't brush my teeth as much as I should. My mother was never investigated for child abuse. How absurd. Oh and that stupid Federline. I don't believe for a minute the man that left his other children and their mother for Britney Spears cares for their well being. I am betting he's going after custody for more Britney Money. I wish Britney and her children nothing but the best. I hope she gets her sanity back soon so that TMZ.com and perez hilton.com can cut her some slack.

I have my suspicions that this investigation could possibly, maybe, have been encouraged from someone in Federline's camp. Think about it- if he wants $$$ and she ain't giving it to him, he could be doing this as a threat- trying to bully her, intimidate her.

She is trying to make a comeback right now and getting bad press right now is VERY inconvenient for her if she has any hope of resurrecting her career.

So it could very well indeed be a nasty, devious , tactic by Federline's lawyers.

You really have to read between the lines in cases like this, see what is really going on. Most people just read the headlines "Britney being investigated for child abuse" and the next thing you know people are gossiping about Britney being a horrible mom, when in REALITY she may be a perfectly good mom, who cares soooo much about her kids, that her ex is using them against her for extortion.

People are so quick to accept what is written or said, but they don't stop to THINK about it- why is this happening, what are all the possible reasons for it. People don't consider all the angles.

UPDATE - Britney has been cleared of all charges - Her lawyer is now trying to find out who called DCFS.
