I was having dinner with my elderly mother, this afore mentioned meal consisted of a small steak for each of us,mashed potatoes and fresh broccoli.
Being a big fan of vegetables,I made short business of my broccoli.I nibbled at my potatoes and sliced bits off my steak every now and again, chewing, digesting amiably enough in turn. Mother seemed to be enjoying her food as well, and we ate on in silence for a few moments. I got up to pour myself a little more green tea with honey and when I returned, my broccoli bowl, empty when I had left, was no longer so.
"What's that?" I asked.
"What?" mother replied.
"That" I said shoving an index finger towards the oddly occupied bowl.
"Dunno." she said and nibbled at a bit of gristle as if i were standing a million miles off.
"Well, either I eat from the ever self-replenishing holy grail or my bowl has..grown a pickle."
I picked up the intrusive bit of food, to find that it was a stripped broccoli stalk, shorn of it's bunchy top, carved down the middle to give it a wedge-like appearance which had lead me to my more than reasonable original pickle deduction.
"It's broccoli, why have ya done this?Can't eat yer food now,huh?I'm sure you'll find room for dessert,nonetheless,eh?Why ya giving it to me, we have a dog y'know."I said,joking, pointing at the dog with the disguised stalk.
"Dog didn't like it."
"Gah."
I looked at the dog, who looked at the floor, as if to say "I didn't slobber on it much, and I'll have dessert when the little old one does, thank ya much."
I set the pic-coli back in the bowl and sipped at my tea."Shame when you get too old for your veggies."I said aloud.
"Don't pick on Marty, she's not that old."mom retorted, scratching Marty's ear.
"I didn't mean the dog."
"Oh."
Needless to say, I cleared the dishes and got ice cream for the humans and flipped on a dvd.Last I knew mom was eating away and had yet to discover her bowl grows miracle pickles as well. shades of Joan Crawford,anyone?
