I walked home with some groceries one day.
I had a six pack of eggs, in one carefully zippered pocket.
I made it home with my tender passengers.
I took them out of the bag, the carton caught on the opened zipper.
They leapt out of my hand to the floor.
One broke.
I cursed and rushed the okay ones to the fridge.
She came home a little bit later and I told her what happened.
Still frustrated that one had lapsed into goo and fragments.
"They weren't your children, darlin'."
She said taming her hair with a rubber band, shuffling some papers.
Using that familiar word, that calmed me and made me feel appropriately a fool for my worries.

My thoughts are tender shelled and albumin full.
Frosting for yolk. Cotton-candied-when-whipped.
Although I can't crush one with my fist....
I feel like the carton is overturned and gremlins are egging
the known world
with my unappreciated secrets.
"Those..are your children, darlin."
She would say. Shuffling papers, looking anywhere else.

Eggs Benedict Arnold, giving me away.

the woman sounds like she is negligent, what with the way she's playing with her hair, shuffling papers, and constantly looking away.
her view about not overreacting to the broken egg seems rational enough but maybe we can relate the broken egg to a broken relationship or some other interpersonal infrastructure. in that case she would just be rationalizing in the given situation.

But her view on "secrets" and how she calls them children is interesting too, because children tend to be nurtured and protected. since this is her view, with maybe HER "unappreciated secrets" (ln 18) , it makes me wonder what she was doing before she "came home a little bit later" (ln 8). protect what kinds of secrets? an affair? a political scandal?
The narrator has become the broken egg as a result of what happened in the first stanza, but the woman answers those feelings with her already numb-like response - "Those...are your children" (ln 19) - as though she thinks that all interpersonal relationships are sour in the end and it's the lie that all involved uphold that makes for great interaction, and those lies should be nurtured, like children.

So the narrator can now no longer be virgin to the overwhelming feelings of his/her corruption being released when "gremlins are egging the known world" (ln 16 -17) and is now a part of the personal/political wheel of scandal.

After reading a second time, this interperetation makes sense. The body language of the narrator and the diction of the first few lines show the narrator's intentions - the eggs were "carefully" (ln 4) packed, the eggs are "tender passengers" (ln 3) and after the mishap, the shortest line in the poem and one of the two lines that stand out the most: "one broke" (ln 6)

sounds like someone carrying top-secret information to me.

I'm sure traitor benedict arnold would agree with me.

Wow Del, you really got into dissecting that piece...holy fried eggs man! Eeker LOL.

Cool poem Pen!

"Love me now or set me free-
I am trainwreck tangled simple
me. " ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"You may not see me, yet you feel me. Your mind struggles to comprehend but is thwarted by ages of lies, who am I? I am you, I am your soul and I am simply me..Darcy"

"My heart beat thrice, twice, once...and then no more the moment a passing comet bespoke of your fall from grace".

My syllables would've run right off the page if they thought they were being dissected...that was an educated act of kindness...and revelation, given the clues. I didn't even know I was giving.

Glad you liked it.

I meant dissecting in a very good way, not negative...just wanted Del too know, lol. Analizing (sp) is a good thing!!
