My Mind was more on several other people with real problems.

JERRY LEWIS HAS GIVEN US YEARS OF LAUGHTER AS A COMEDIAN BUT HE HAS RUN THE MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY ASSOCIATION TELETHON FOR OVER 50 YEARS. MANY KIDS NOW HAVE COLLEGE DEGREES AND LIVE NORMAL LIVES BECAUSE OF HIM. MAY GOD BLESS HIM & KEEP HIM FUNNY.

Friars Honor (and Skewer) Jerry Lewis
By EDDY FRIEDFELD
June 16, 2006

On June 9, comedy legend Jerry Lewis was named abbot of the Friars Club and was honored in true Friar fashion — with a roast.

"You just got a lifetime contract at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas," joked comedian Stewie Stone in one of the night's many cracks about Lewis's age, "and the over and under is Thursday."

"How is it possible that Jerry looks worse than Dean [Martin, who died in 1995]?" comedian/filmmaker Jeffrey Ross asked. "Why are you so bloated?" he needled Lewis. "You look like you drowned four days ago. What agency are you with, FEMA?

"How do you roast a guy who's older than laughter?" Ross continued. "Jerry is going to star in a new reality show on The History Channel called 'Last Comic Breathing.' He has the life expectancy of an Iraqi police officer."

Lewis was flanked by a dais full of stars, including Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese (Lewis's co-star and director, respectively, in the 1983 film "The King of Comedy"); the cast of "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"; most of the cast of "The Sopranos," living and dead; comedian Robert Klein, and the Friars Club president, Freddie Roman. The event was emceed by actor/comedian Richard Belzer (one of the stars of "Law & Order: SVU"), whose mantra for the evening was "We only roast the ones we love."

"We make fun of Jerry Lewis, but what about the good things Jerry Lewis does?" Ross said. "What about the fact that just this past Labor Day, a 6-year-old boy got up out of his wheelchair and walked for the first time — to turn off the Jerry Lewis telethon."

Paul Shaffer, David Letterman's musician sidekick, said that "Jerry's gift for improvisation influenced me at an early age: When I was 13, I wrote special lyrics to my haftorah."

The roasters took shots at France, which awarded Lewis the Legion of Honor in 1984. "The French gave us the Statue of Liberty," Stone said. "And we gave them Jerry Lewis."

When the time came for Lewis to take the mic, he struck a more somber note. "I never didn't remember to be thankful," he said. "The pilot on the airplane coming to New York sent me a note that simply said 'Thank you.' It said more than an hour and a half from anyone else. It represents what makes a lifetime in this business an exceptional one."

Jerry Lewis Recovering, Labor Day Telethon Still On Track

June 20, 2006 3:00 a.m. EST

Matthew Borghese - All Headline News Staff Writer
Los Angeles, CA (AHN) - Jerry Lewis is returning to work after undergoing surgery following a "very minor" heart attack.

Lewis, 80, will return to work preparing his annual Labor Day telethon for his muscular dystrophy charity.

According to his assistant, Penny Rice, "Presently he's in San Diego aboard his yacht getting some [rest]. He's doing quite well. Nothing will hold him back from the telethon."

According to E! News, Lewis' manager, Claudia Marghilano, told the Associated Press the funnyman was also taking medication for pneumonia, which Lewis came down with before suffering the heart attack on June 11. Pneumonia commonly strikes people with pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung ailment Lewis was diagnosed with six years ago.

"He's had [pneumonia] several times. That's typical of having this lung illness. They put him on antibiotics and he's recovering. He's just doing great now," Marghilano said.

ABOUT MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY
http://www.mdausa.org/

Muscular dystrophy, or MD, includes more than 30 genetic diseases characterized by progressive weakness and degeneration of the skeletal muscles. The disorders vary greatly in the type of muscle affected, age of onset, rate of progression and pattern of inheritance.

Duchenne MD is the most common form and primarily affects boys. The disorder progresses rapidly; most boys are unable to walk by age 12 and later need respirators to breathe. Females in these families have a 50 percent chance of inheriting and passing the defective gene to their children. Becker MD is similar but less severe than Duchenne.

Central core disease, also diagnosed in childhood, is typified by weakness in the lower trunk and legs, and generally isn't progressive in nature.

Facioscapulohumeral MD usually begins in the teenage years and causes weakness in muscles of the face, arms, legs, and around the shoulders and chest. It progresses slowly, and severity varies.

Myotonic MD is the most common adult form and can include muscle spasms, cataracts, and cardiac and endocrine abnormalities. An individual with myotonic MD has a long, thin face, drooping eyelids and a swanlike neck.

There's no cure for any form of muscular dystrophy. Physical therapy, respiratory therapy, speech therapy, medications, and orthopedic surgery and devices may be used to slow the progression of the disease and improve quality of life. The prognosis for people with MD depends on the type and progression. Some cases may be mild, while others produce severe muscle weakness and disability. Some children with MD die in infancy, while others live into adulthood with only moderate disability.

Daniel "Tiger" Schaefer is just 8 years old, but he already knows that sometimes kids are just going to be kids.

His maturity has a lot to do with the fact that he lives every day with central core disease, a type of muscular dystrophy that causes weakness in the lower body. He's learned how to let occasional hurtful remarks from classmates slide off his back.

"They'll point and say, 'Oh, you're in a wheelchair,' " Tiger said. "And I'm like, 'So I'm in a wheelchair. What's your point?' "

Central core disease is a neuromuscular condition that causes varying degrees of weakness in the lower trunk and legs, although it can affect other areas. The condition is named for the metabolically inactive "cores" that appear in the middle of muscle cells affected by the disease when the cells are stained and viewed under a microscope. The cells also lack mitochondria, the energy production units of cells. It's believed these deficiencies in energy production are the primary causes of the muscle weakness associated with the disease, known as CCD.

As an autosomal dominant hereditary condition, just one parent has to pass on the mutated gene in order for a child to have the disease. Tiger and his twin 16-year-old sisters, Nikki and Kristen, inherited the condition from their mother, Debbie. Though they all have the same condition, his sisters and mother have a milder form. They can't run or jump, but unlike Tiger, they've always been able to walk without assistance.

In its mild form, the disease is essentially invisible, causing no noticeable symptoms. Tiger's condition -- centered mostly in his hips -- keeps him from being able to stand and walk without a walker.

When Tiger was born with dislocated hips, his parents immediately suspected CCD was the cause. Plus, his sisters already had been diagnosed with the disease.

For the first several years of his life, Tiger was in and out of casts that encased his body from the hips down. Each time the casts were removed, his hips would dislocate again. At age 5, he had surgery to install plates to permanently stabilize his hips. For unknown reasons, people with CCD are susceptible to severe, even life-threatening, reactions to some common anesthetics, so surgery for CCD patients must be planned carefully.

Through it all, though, Tiger stayed upbeat. "He's always just been a real positive person," said his father, Donald.

Much of Tiger's optimism stems from the fact that CCD -- unlike many other forms of muscular dystrophy -- generally isn't a progressive disease, meaning it doesn't usually get worse over time. In fact, most people with CCD eventually are able to walk.

Central core disease is more of a "structural abnormality" in the muscle cells, so there's less concern about further damaging the muscles, said Dr. William G. Mackenzie, chairman of orthopedics at Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Rockland.

While CCD can cause frustrating delays in normal motor-skill development early in life, the long-term prognosis for most patients is quite good, Mackenzie said.

"There's no heart involvement, which is a big concern with other MDs like Duchenne MD. Those kids die in their early 20s," he said. "With central core disease, their longevity is about the same [as the general population], and the vast majority do go on to walk."

As with many forms of muscular dystrophy, there is some controversy surrounding the benefits of exercise in children with CCD. Some researchers believe increased activity can cause a potentially harmful buildup of excess calcium in the muscle cells of CCD patients.

During the school year, Tiger undergoes physical therapy twice a week during school hours and once a week outside of school. The regular physical activity is aimed at improving his strength, flexibility and balance. Though it's his legs that are affected by the disease, he also works to strengthen his arms, since that's where most of his physical exertion is relegated.

For the most part, Tiger's able to handle everyday tasks on his own. Though he needs help getting up on a toilet, he can usually work his way into the bathtub on his own. In the mornings, he makes his way down the steps to get breakfast by crawling. His father then helps him put on his leg braces and sets him up in his wheelchair. His school bus is equipped with a lift, and he gets around the hallways of Cedar Lane Elementary School with both a vertical and traditional wheelchair.

Tiger also stays physically active outside therapy. He plays Challenger League baseball, enjoys hockey and always looks forward to activity-filled days during his annual trip to the Muscular Dystrophy Association summer camp. When it's warm, he also takes to the backyard pool, where the decreased effects of gravity allow him to swim lap after lap without tiring.

"Once I'm in there, I'm there for hours," he said.

As a Goodwill Ambassador for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Tiger has been on TV numerous times, including an appearance on the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon. He and his Middletown-area family hope that greater exposure to conditions like his will help other people become more comfortable with the diseases.

"It doesn't offend me when people ask questions," Tiger said. "What offends me is people who think I can't do anything myself."

I guess this kid could spend everyday of the rest of his life saying I'm here, hot, cold, angry, sad and mad but somehow he appreciates the beauty in the little things he can do.-may god bless him-

If I could be you, if you could be me
For just one hour, if we could find a way
To get inside each other's mind
If you could see you through my eyes
Instead your own ego I believe you'd be
I believe you'd be surprised to see
That you've been blind

Walk a mile in my shoes
just walk a mile in my shoes
Before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Then walk a mile in my shoes

Now if we spend the day
Throwin' stones at one another
'Cause I will think, 'cause I will think
To wear my hat the same way you do
Well, I may be common people
But I'm your brother
And when you strike out
You're tryin' to hurt me
It's hurtin' you, Lord how mercy

Now there are people on reservations
And out in the ghetto
And whether they're for the grace of God
Or you and I,
If I only had wings of a little angel
Don't you know, I'd fly
To the top of a mountain
And then I'd cry, cry, cry

Walk a mile in my shoes
just walk a mile in my shoes
Before you abuse, criticize and accuse
Then walk a mile in my shoes
