I will be taking a trip to Memphis with my aunt in about two weeks. She is a huge Elvis fan and visited there when he was still alive. She has always wanted to go back and tour Graceland but has never been able to. I am now in a position to be able to take her. We will be on a budget but I have always wanted to visit Memphis and I am so excited to share this with someone who has meant so much to me! Here is what I need the help on....
1.) places to stay. I would like to stay somewhere that is somewhat inexpensive but not a dump. Keep in mind I have traveled a lot of places and stayed in some dives but I do have my 60 year old aunt going with me and want it to be comfortable for her.

2.) We will of course go to the staple attractions, Graceland, Sun Studio, National Civil rights museum, rock and roll soul musuem, Slave Haven, and A. Schwab but are there any other interesting suggestions anyone has?

I know many people here have visited or live in Memphis so any help you can give me would be great. I want to make this an amazing trip for my aunt!
Thanks

Ive only been there once, and the only suggestions beyond the places you've already posted are to go to Beale Street, Corky's BBQ Ribs (they have GREAT food!) ....and I stayed at the Peabody, not quite sure how expensive it is, but I bet your aunt would enjoy the 'Royal Ducks'! Hope you have a fabulous time!

thanks for the info. If anyone has anything to add that would be great! Lil of course Beale street is a must and Corky's sounds great. I was thinking that even if we do not stay at the peabody which I understand is pretty pricey then we will go there and see the royal ducks.

I've been there a time or two or 10.. Wink

My favorite spot is (as you might have guess) the Heart Break Hotel. It you don't stay there, you can still stop by the gift shop/lounge for a visit. Make sure you order a fried PB&B sandwich from the lounge, it's the BEST in Memphis, if you like PB&B! (no joke) HBH isn't the cheapest but it's affordable. HBH Just all depends where you wanna stay, on EP Blvd or downtown or what. Days Inn Graceland is the closest to G-land, other than HBH. It has a guitar shaped pool too.. hehe I guess they're trying to be like the heart shaped pool @ HBH! There are several hotels on EP Blvd.. Scottish Inn is very close to G-land as well, it's pretty nice. Try this link to ck prices & availability Hotels.com

Brother Juniper's has GREAT inexpensive southern food (little hard to find, but WELL worth the trip). Beniihana's (Japanese) is OUTSTANDING if you wanna splurge one night for dinner (Elvis was friends w/ the owner.. pics on wall). Gridiron (close to EP Blvd, another place E supposedly visited & ate) is another good place to get downhome southern food. Rock N Roll Cafe (by the EP gift shops), Rum Boogie Cafe and EP Delta Kitchen & Bar (on Beale), Corky's is a must have (try the bananna puddin too), Marlowe's Ribs (you can get picked up in a pink caddy if you call ahead).. Thats about all I can think of right now. Boy, this is sure making me wanna go!

Depending on if you have time & gas money, I highly suggest you take a day & visit E's birth home in Tupelo. It's not that far, say bout hr or so drive and very easy to find. Admission is reasonable, like about $7 for an adult. Elvis's birthplace

The Memphis Zoo is great fun!!! Big Grin

I would not suggest staying near Graceland. It is scary on that street. Maybe during Elvis week it would not be so bad, but still scary there. I always book on Priceline.com name your own price. Memphis east is the area we stay in. It's the nice part of town, near Germantown. MUCH better class of people. I always put in downtown and Memhis east. I think the highest star rating on there for Memphis is 3. I put that in and then put in a price of $50-$60 . I always get the Doubletree or the Hilton.

Rendevous has the best ribs is famous and has been around forever. Definately a must see.
The civil Rights museum is great too.
Gus Fried chicken is a great place to eat downtown.
Hope this helps.

Yeap, I forgot to mention that EP Blvd is definitely in a sketchy part of town, that's why if we wanna be by G-land, we stay @ the HBH or Days Inn or Scottish Inn. Those are all walking distance to G-land and are somewhat safe inexpensive rooms & convenient to G-land.

OK looks like I found 3 that I think are in the Germantown area. Days Inn Memphis- I-40 and Sycamore is the cheapest, then Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott (Macon Cove Rd) and La Quinta Inn and Suites Primacy Park (Primacy Parkway). Any suggestions about which would be best and also am I actually looking in the area I think I am...ie Germantown area?

Sycmore exit, not so great. That's not such a great area. We once stayed one night there. Try and stay somewhere off of Poplar. I don't know about the other ones. Sorry. Cordova is fine too, just a little bit ****her out.
