God I loved this nun, she was awesome!! She taught us English from 4th to 6th grades. This woman inspired the love of reading in me. She would go downtown and buy Rock Candy at Candy-rama and "when we were good in english class" she would pass out all flavors of rock candy and read to us for the rest of class. I don't know what made me search for her online. That is what we called her Sr. Ernie Baby. I will never forget that woman. And dang Candy Rama has closed it's doors last year. That store was a kids dream Candy-Rama
Sr. Ernestine Alberter Allison Park Sister Ernestine Alberter CDP died two weeks prior to her 100th birthday on Sunday, Nov. 8, 2008. She entered religious life from Immaculate Conception Parish in Johnstown in 1924. She was a teacher for 62 years, until her retirement in 1987. She taught English for many of those years in a number of Pittsburgh area schools, including Toner Institute in Brookline (1928-29; 1948-49; 1954-44), St. Basil's in Carrick (1929-36; 1945-46), St. Mary's in Beaver Falls (1938-43), St. Mary's in Sharpsburg (1949-53; 1983-87); St. Mary's in McKees Rocks (1946-48; 1975-83) and Immaculate Conception in Johnstown (1956-60; 1968-75). Good natured, pleasant and fun-loving, Sister Ernestine attributed her long life and keen mind to her love of coffee and drinking five to eight cups a day. Sister delighted in being able to recite the entire Gettysburg Address from heart and to sing The Twelve Days of Christmas. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and 1,000 Sisters of Divine Providence and Associates throughout the world. She was preceded in death by parents, Anna Yeager and George W. Alberter; and siblings, Leo, Norbert, Gertrude Cassidy, Sister Mary Norbert CDP and Sister Agnella Alberter CDP. Friends received 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Providence Heights Motherhouse. Funeral Mass will follow at 3:30 p.m. in the Mother of Divine Providence Chapel. Arrangements by ANTHONY G. STAAB FUNERAL HOME. Memorials may be made to the Sisters of Divine Providence Ministry Fund, 9000 Babcock Blvd., Allison Park, PA 15101. |
