KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The caretaker of a dog suspected in the mauling death of a 71-year-old woman was charged with involuntary manslaughter, officials said.

The man denied he was responsible for the attack and claimed to only feed one of the dogs at a home where he used to live.

Derrick D. Lee, 32, of Kansas City, told The Kansas City Star on Friday that another dog found attacking the woman was a stray.

Firefighters needed an ax and a long pole to pull the dog away from Jimmie May McConnell when they found her in her yard Thursday.

McConnell had extensive bites on her limbs and torso, "but not one of the bites were such that you could say one was responsible for her death," Wyandotte County coroner Alan Hancock said.

Preliminary autopsy results indicated McConnell died of a cardiac arrhythmia brought on by the trauma of the attack.

The bite marks will be examined by an expert to determine whether more than one dog attacked the elderly widow, officials said.

Investigators were uncertain of the dogs' breed but suspected they were pit bulls, which are banned in the city.

I disagree. The animals aren't the problem; the people are. People make tons of money breeding dogs and doing it improperly and inbreeding does scary things. Then owners mistreat or teach dogs to attack like crazy so they do. People abuse animals in so many ways and this is another dangerous abuse that people pay attention to because it impacts society by people getting mauled. Innocent: The people who are mauled. Guilty: The abusive, money-grubbing breeders and the owners who use a dog like a gun to hurt others. As usual, no one wants to take responsibiilty so it's easier to shoot the dog or put it to sleep. We can kill every animal alive and we will still be in big trouble because of all the messed-up shh that people do.

I was reading an electric meter in a back yard, not aware a pit bull was there. He comes running towards me. I figured I'd be mauled. Well, he licked me to death.

so, how do you explain the pit bull that attacked a woman who was the sister of the owner and was always visiting the house? or the pit bull that attacked two kids playing and its owner had to put his fist in it's mouth to fight the dog off and couldn't, until cops came and killed it?? These dogs were breed for one thing , to kill, and they do that well.

I still think it goes back to how the dogs are bred. Inbred people are scary characters and inbred attack dogs even more so. I'm not even in favour of breeding dogs for pets because there are so many strays dying and need homes. But that's my opinion. I respect other people's. I totally get why a person would want to kill a dog that killed. I, personally, just don't think it's the best answer.
