I know that Jesus wasn't depicted in art with a beard until the discovery of the shroud of turin...I have seen lovely art of him beardless....I havent seen any with him smiling?

Is there any ancient art anyone knows of...with him smiling? I don't mean anything new.

I had a discussion about crucifixes before.. how in different cultures... his face is moribund on the cross,(for unfortunately we worship a bleeding man..) but some have him smiling acsending off the cross..

I know art is subjective ..to the artist and their situation, time and statement.., and each person would draw him accordingly.. the first time I drew Jesus, he looked like Eric Clapton
( I guess he related at one point in his career,lol)......with a peace sign shaped guitar, looking serious and channelling,lol...

So possibly more popular than even John Lennon... has anyone seen a cheerful saviour smile?

He's always smiling in the cheesy surrounded-by-animals-and-children-type paintings that make him look more like a male Snow White than a crucified saviour..


Western imagery of Christ irks me. There's a fascinating series of images we had to study at college, where it gives an example of a depiction of Christ from each of a variety of cultures around the world. It's amazing to see just how deeply our own context is reflected in the picture. i wish i could think where to find it.

Actually, i remembered. It's a package called 'The Christ We Share' ..i can't find it properly online, but there's a fair sample of images here and if you google it you get the general idea.

Yes! My husband has a painting of Jesus that belonged to his grandmother. We`ve had this painting for at least 18 years. We were actually just discussing the other night how we need to take this painting to be restored because the color is fading.I will take a pic of it with my camera phone and post it.

It is unusual but I agree, there`s not many paintings out there that depict him smiling, not even a hint of one.
