Shaking my head in disbelief........

Oscar-winning US actress Gwyneth Paltrow feels dinner talk is far more interesting in her adopted homeland Britain than back in her native country.
"I love the English lifestyle, it's not as capitalistic as America. People don't talk about work and money, they talk about interesting things at dinner," she told "NS," the weekend magazine supplement of daily Portuguese newspaper Diario de Noticias on Saturday.

"I like living here because I don't fit into the bad side of American psychology. The British are much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans," the 34-year-old added.

Paltrow, who won a best actress Oscar for 1998's "Shakespeare in Love," lives in London with British band Coldplay's frontman Chris Martin whom she wed in 2003.

She said having US pop star Madonna, 48, who married British film director Guy Ritchie six years ago, nearby was another advantage to living in London.

"She's like an older sister. Everything I have gone through, she went through ten times worse and ten times longer. She gives me good advice about how to say no and take care of myself," said Paltrow.

I don't get why people are so angry when all she is doing is giving an opinion. Also, this statement wasn't the only one she made, so it's kind of taken out of context because it's incomplete without the complete paragraph she stated.

She also said the the reason she felt this way is because Americans are overly capitalistic (sp?).

I would have to agree with her. We Americans are overly capitalistic. Granted, I love America and the freedoms it gives me, but it's the honest to God truth. AMERICA IS OVERLY CAPITALISTIC.

It used to be the land of the American dream where a poor man could actually get ahead, and now it's the land of "me, me, me" with rich people stomping all over the middle class. Proof can be seen by looking at the people on Forbes 100 list. Most are very selfish people. That's the reason they are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo rich. And that's the reason people were left to die after Hurricane Katrina happened to.

"Me, me, me" attitudes. That's why. Frowner

Doesn't in no way mean I'd move to London though.... Razzer

As much as the statement May be true, every country has their problems...I'm from Canada, and I know that the people I've known from the States can swing either way, same as they do here.

She may think and believe that Americans are capitalistic, that`s her right to believe whatever she wants. HOWEVER, the fact that she had the nerve to say that the British are "much more intelligent and civilized than the Americans" is totally uncalled for and it shows just how stupid this woman is.

The American dream is still very much alive. Just because someone doesn`t grace the cover of a national magazine or make national news does not mean they have not achieved the American Dream. People achieve everyday of their lives. It depends on what each of us view as the American Dream. This country has become the land of people looking for handouts. People who continue to blame their circumstances for the financial position they are in and therefore they go looking toward the government, expecting a handout of some kind. Granted, some are legitimate and need help--I`m not talking about those. I`m talking about the people who chose to continue to live the life they complain about. The ones who say they are stuck in that life because the government won`t give them this or that.
You`re right, there`s alot of selfish people out there but there`s also alot of no doers.

I can't speak for any of those people. I've worked my arse of my entire life, have never gotten a handout, and the GOVERNMENT takes most of my paycheck. Period. If that's the government you love, good for you. I don't though. I, personally, would like to know that my taxes actually go someplace useful, rather then into our GOVERNMENT'S open ended pockets with absolutely no accountability whatsoever.

You're right when you state some people "want" a hand out and don't work for it. The problem is that there are too many second-generation yahoos nowadays who expect everything because their parents enabled them by spoiling them when they were children. This attitude can be seen in every welfare recipient who stays in the system rather then getting an education and making something of themselves. Ironically though, this same attitude can also be seen in a lot of wealthy people and in our present President. Would Bush be a welfare bum if he were raised on the other side of the tracks? Well, my opinion is that he probably would have been. Because, to me, it's all about a person's attitude. Mr. Bush doesn't really work for a living, that's the reason he had a "C" mentality in college. He didn't need work ethic. He got a handout.

That's what I was talking about. This "me, me, me" attitude a lot of people in this country have. That to me is what has destroyed the American dream.

The people who refuse to get off of welfare destroy the American dream with every child that they pop out. This is undeniable. I find it funny that the people who get the biggest tax cuts are the same people who are chewing up the American dream. And this folks, are the extremely wealthy and the extremely poor. Both might be at different ends of the scale, but they both share the same attitude. Meanwhile, the middle class and the small businessman or woman get left in the dark.

Furthermore, there are also "rich" people who take advantage of the poor by "twisting" labor laws. This can be seen by every truck driver who works in the good ole United States of America. They get paid per mile instead of per hour, often work 80 hours a week, and rarely make minimum wage if you were to convert their pay into an hourly wage, which is totally legal under the Department of Transportation laws. It's slave labor right here in the U.S. of A. and nobody gives a d a m n. That's the reason every trucking agency is on the Forbes 100 list.

Good old capitalism, right here in America. Roll Eyes

By the way, the rolling eyes aren't for any person posting on this thread. Their for a system that is broken. A system that is called America.

Boy, it's getting serious here. It all started with a celeb-bash and now y'all are getting deep. I agree she can say what she wants and stuff out of context can sound bad. Still, I can also understand fans who think she's sounding ungrateful of the country who helped her become so rich and famous. I'm not sure that would have happened if she'd moved to London and tried to start up there before her Oscar and her famous husband. Oh well, peeps gotta do want they want, huh? Freedom.

I agree with you on the welfare thing, that was the point I was trying to make. Too many of them stay in the system because they`re simply too lazy to get off their butts and work. Instead, they expect the government to hand everything over to them.

---**Furthermore, there are also "rich" people who take advantage of the poor by "twisting" labor laws. This can be seen by every truck driver who works in the good ole United States of America. ---------My uncle drove a long distance truck for over 30 years. My uncle retired 6 years ago. He was always paid by the mile rather than by the hour and quite frankly, he would never have it any other way! Believe me, he wasn`t hurting for money or anything else. He made more money being paid by the mile and he didn`t work 80 hours a week. He did this while raising two daughters.

Unique Dog- That isn't the case with the majority of all truck drivers nowadays. Yes, some of the old-timers actually did make good money, especially if they were "owner-operators" who owned their own trucks. A person can make good money this way if they live in the midwest because they can usually get more miles per load. Try living near a major city though. There is absolutely no money in it unless a person gets a lot of miles, which rarely happens anymore. These big trucking companies don't do this nowadays. Most of them give a person 50 miles of pay to go from someplace like San Jose to San Francisco. Meanwhile, an individual can sit in traffic for up to 5 hours in the bay area with only 50 miles of pay. Now, do you see what I mean? Slave labor. If someone can get lucky enough to constantly get loads from San Francisco to New York though, yes, it can pay off. This doesn't happen as often as it used to though. There are certain "prime" states to live in if a person actually wants to make a living being a truck driver. California definitely isn't one of them.

LJ- My God woman, that was funny? Got any other interesting names? I kind of liked Wheat Chex...lol... Razzer
